ECB to lift limits on bank dividends from September
Supervisor stresses lenders should remain prudent in distributing dividends and share buy-backs
The European Central Bank (ECB) decided to lift restrictions on banks’ dividend distribution on July 23.
The ECB first introduced these limits in March 2020 in a bid to boost banks’ capacity to absorb losses and maintain credit flows to households and businesses during the pandemic.
The supervisor of 114 significant banks across the eurozone’s 19 member states extended this recommendation in July 2020 and in December. These limits, which also include share buy-backs, will remain in force until
