Former politician becomes governor days after MPC raises rates; lira falls sharply

Turkey’s central bank governor was dismissed on March 20, just over a day after the monetary policy committee announced a sharp rate rise.

The Turkish government announced early on Saturday morning that it had fired Naci Ağbal, who spent just four months in the role. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has now dismissed three central bank governors in under two years, as the country faces rising inflation and a depreciating currency.
