Syrian central bank issues new banknote
New 5,000 lira note is issued as expert estimates that war-torn country’s inflation has reached 179%
Syria’s central bank has issued a new large-denomination banknote in response to the country’s rapidly rising inflation, Arab media outlets have reported.
The Central Bank of Syria began circulating the 5,000-lira banknote on January 24, the London-based newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported. The newspaper said the new banknote shows a soldier saluting the Syrian flag on one side, and a fresco from the Baal Shemin Temple in Palmyra.
Using official exchange rates, 5,000 Syrian lira are worth $9.75
