Early non-employment ‘scars’ workers – Bank of Italy paper
Effect is particularly severe for non-graduates and when conditions are good, research finds
Non-employment early in an individual’s career increases the chances they will suffer the same later on, a working paper published by the Bank of Italy finds.
In Scars of youth non-employment and labour market conditions, Giulia Martina Tanzi uses data on a sample of Italian young people from 2009 to 2018. She computes “the time spent in non-employment during the first three years after the theoretical date of graduation (the early period) and in the subsequent six years (the later period).”
