US Treasury imposes sanctions on Syrian central bank chief

Governor Karfoul used extortion tactics to help Assad regime, alleges US Treasury

The US Treasury Department has placed individual sanctions on Syria’s central bank governor, it announced on September 30, accusing him of using extortion tactics.

The Treasury announced individual sanctions against three people whom it called senior supporters of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, including central bank governor Hazem Younes Karfoul. It also announced sanctions against a Syrian intelligence chief and a businessman whom it accused of funding government military forces in Syria’s
