Riksbank signals rates likely to stay at zero for several years

Central bank does not forecast negative rates, but doesn’t rule them out

Sveriges Riksbank says its policy rate is likely to stay at zero at least until 2023, as the economy continues to grapple with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In its latest policy statement, unveiled today (September 22), the Riksbank indicates that it does not plan to take the rate negative. However, it leaves the option of further rate cuts open.

The central bank’s forecasts indicate a likely repo rate of 0% in Q3 2023, the end of the forecast horizon. Unemployment is expected to peak
