Angola to issue its first polymer banknotes

Governor says new banknote series will improve security and durability, and cut costs

Angola’s central bank will release the first of its new polymer banknotes this month, but will hold off releasing the highest denomination unless “absolutely necessary”.

A new 200 kwanza ($0.35) banknote will enter circulation on July 30, governor José de Lima Massano said in a speech on July 8.This will be followed by the 500, 1,000, and 2,000 banknote, all of which will be printed on a new polymer substrate.

Massano said the new substrate will allow it to incorporate tougher security
