The International Monetary Fund has said it is working towards a new arrangement with São Tomé and Príncipe following the country’s “sluggish” economic growth.

In a statement on August 6, the IMF said it had completed a programme negotiation mission to São Tomé and Príncipe, and emphasised that it was vital to bring the country’s large debt under control.

São Tomé completed an IMF programme last year, which the IMF described as producing “limited progress”. Its GDP grew by only 2.7% in 2018
