US bank holding companies have become less complex – NY Fed paper

Researcher examines organisational, business and geographical complexity in decade after 2007

US bank holding companies’ organisational and geographical complexity has declined since 2007, though they remain very complex, a paper published the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows.

Using a new dataset to examine the organisational, business and geographical complexity of bank holding companies (BHCs), Linda Goldberg looks at whether large US banks have simplified their operations in the decade since 2007.

She finds that the most complex BHCs have reduced the number of legal entities
