Philippines governor Espenilla dies after 18 months in office

Career central banker tightened monetary policy and championed payment system reforms

The Philippines Central Bank announced that governor Nestor Espenilla died of cancer on February 23 after just over 18 months in the role.

He was a career central banker, who considerably tightened monetary policy during his brief period as governor. The Philippines government also recently approved a major increase in the central bank’s capital and significant reforms in its governance. Espenilla was credited by some observers with significant reforms during his time in charge of supervising
