Single-use banknotes with QR codes could be the future of cash, DNB cash head says
Members of the public may be able to print their own single-use banknotes with integrated QR codes in the future, the head of the Netherlands Bank’s cash policy department said.
Speaking at a conference in Athens on February 20, Jan Binnekamp stressed that while cash usage was in decline, cash “as a system” needs to be maintained.
“We may get to a point where people will be able to print their own banknotes at home with QR codes on, which when activated would be for a specific amount,”
Only users who have a paid subscription or are part of a corporate subscription are able to print or copy content.
