EU legal officer says Latvian government wrongly barred governor
Authorities provided no evidence to back claims governor acted corruptly, advocate general says
A senior European Union legal official has said Latvia’s criminal justice system was not justified in effectively barring the country’s central bank governor Ilmārs Rimšēvičs from carrying out his role after he was arrested on corruption charges.
The EU’s advocate general issued an official opinion on December 19 saying that “by suspending the governor of the Bank of Latvia from office, the Republic of Latvia has failed to fulfil its obligations” under European treaties.
