Kuroda defends BoJ’s asset purchases

Central bank could face problems when it unloads ETFs, former senior official warns

Bank of Japan governor Haruhiko Kuroda told the Japanese parliament on December 7 that he does not anticipate an early end to the central bank’s purchases of exchange-traded funds.

One former senior BoJ official tells Central Banking that the bank should consider ending the programme, but predicts that it could face severe difficulty in doing so.

With inflation still below the BoJ’s 2% target, it is too early to consider slowing or ending its exchange-traded fund (ETF) purchases, Kuroda said
