Competition offsets higher costs and demand in Sweden

Somewhat weak inflation keeps rate-setters from increasing interest rates despite stronger growth

Higher trade costs and increased demand in the service sector are being offset in Sweden by competition, keeping inflation on target, a new central bank survey has found.

“Foreign and domestic cost pressures have increased in the trade sector. Higher demand and higher domestic costs have contributed to price increases in service branches,” says Sveriges Riksbank. “At the same time, competition has held back price pressures in these sectors.”
