SBP ramps up SMS service to handle Eid banknote surge
Service helped millions access fresh notes during the annual demand surge around the festival
Many central banks have to deal with surges in demand for banknotes – specifically clean, fresh notes – around major festivals.
In Pakistan, the central bank has to cope each year with a spike in demand around Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. During the festival people traditionally share gifts of cash, particularly with younger relatives, and the expectation is the notes will be crisp and new.
This year the festival fell on June 14 and 15, and the State Bank of Pakistan
