Brazil nears end of easing cycle as rates hit fresh low

Committee signals there will likely be a pause in rate cuts soon

Policymakers at the Central Bank of Brazil have cut rates to a fresh low of 6.5%, while signalling that the easing cycle may soon come to an end.

The 25-basis point cut on March 21 comes against a backdrop of an improving global economy and accelerating growth in Brazil as the country recovers from a deep recession in 2015 and 2016.

The policy committee says inflation appears to have evolved “more benignly than expected”, with inflation expectations for 2018 at around 3.6%, towards the lower
