European Commission calls for action on NPLs

Commission’s proposals differ from ECB’s October document

The European Commission issued a set of proposals today (March 14) for dealing with non-performing loans that in one significant respect ran contrary to the European Central Bank’s October 4 proposals.

The commission said banks should change their capital levels to cushion against NPLs that had been issued from whenever the new measures took effect. By contrast, the ECB said in October that banks should have to change their capital levels to deal with loans that became non-performing regardless
