Cash usage around the world is declining. But the volume of cash in circulation continues to grow, as consumers are increasingly using it, for instance, as a store of value. This somewhat counterintuitive trend is altering assumptions about the lifecycle of banknotes, as a gap emerges between cash in actual use and in circulation.
