Central bank alters export regulation for sea cucumbers

End of trading ban has led to boom in the Solomon Islands’ exports of the sea creatures

The Central Bank of the Solomon Islands has taken the decision to regulate the exportation of sea cucumbers, after local authorities lifted a ban on the commodity, triggering a boom in sales of the sea creatures.

Under the Exchange Control Act and Regulations, the central bank has the power to control the export of any commodity. It is now intervening to protect the “high value and fast depleting” resource that sea cucumbers represent.

“Prior to exporting, all licensed [sea cucumber] exporters
