Brazil loosens prudential regulations for non-banks

Small non-banks’ regulatory processes will be made cheaper under new legislation

From February 2018, certain non-bank institutions in Brazil will be able to opt in to the ‘Simplified Prudential Regime’ (RPS), which will tailor regulation to an institution’s activities and size.

“Today, only co-operatives are authorised by the central bank to adopt a simplified prudential regime… this experience is extremely positive because of the simplicity of the process,” says Otávio Damaso, regulation director at the Central Bank of Brazil, in a press release.

To date, 919 co-operative
