Viñals leaves IMF to chair Standard Chartered
Lagarde praises Viñals for “sharp intellect” and “analytical rigour” during seven years of service at the fund
José Viñals will leave the International Monetary Fund with immediate effect, it was announced today (July 27). He will become chairman of the board of Standard Chartered later this year.
Viñals has served as the IMF's financial counsellor and director of monetary and capital markets since 2009. He is leaving the role and returning to Europe for "family reasons".
Ratna Sahay, Viñals' deputy, has been named acting director for an interim period. The fund announced the search to find a successor
