Two people were injured when a gunman opened fire at the Central Bank of Venezuela on June 20, governor Nelson Merentes told local media.

Reports say the man, who has yet to be identified, was shot dead after injuring two guards and taking one female employee hostage for a number of minutes. It is the latest act of violence to rock a nation battling with a failing economy and triple-digit inflation.

Merentes appeared before local media yesterday evening (June 20), in front of the central bank
