Shocks to bank finance hit exports, Bank of Italy paper argues

Exporters and non-exporters react differently to bank credit shocks, a Bank of Italy working paper argues; researchers present ‘unique firm-bank matched database’ for Italian businesses

Shocks to bank credit led Italian firms to cut back on exports before they reduced production for home markets, according to a working paper published by the Bank of Italy.

In The heterogeneous response of domestic sales and exports to bank credit shocks, Ines Buono and Sara Formai study the link between credit and exports for Italian firms between 1997 and 2008.
