Draghi says ‘risk of side effects’ will not stand in ECB’s way
‘Unintended consequences’ will not deter ECB from easing policy, governor says
European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi argued for the effectiveness of monetary easing in a strongly worded speech in Frankfurt today (February 4), insisting the ECB would not "surrender" to low inflation.
If the ECB "needed to adopt a more expansionary policy, the risk of side effects would not stand in our way", Draghi said. The ECB's governing council is due to "review and possibly reconsider" its stance in its next meeting, on March 10.
