Irish central bank defends retention payments to key staff
The Central Bank of Ireland has spent a total of €234,176 on 'retention payments' since 2013, it confirmed on November 25, insisting the move was legal under Irish law.
The news has caused some controversy in Ireland, since it was first revealed by a local trade union. Ireland's state employees have been banned from receiving bonuses since 2009 under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (FEMPI) Act. Critics of the scheme contend the payments amount to a bonus, an argument that
