French economists protest against choice of central bank governor
Letter strongly recommends, but does not name, ECB’s Cœuré
One hundred and fifty French economists have signed a public letter challenging the government's decision to nominate François Villeroy de Galhau as the next governor of the Banque de France (BdF).
The economists strongly recommend Benoit Cœuré, currently a member of the executive board of the European Central Bank (ECB), and suggest he was not appointed because of his resistance to pressure from the political and banking worlds.
Cœuré was until recently regarded as the front-runner to succeed
