Dennis Lockhart offers latest assessment of US economic conditions

Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta president Dennis Lockhart has highlighted the importance of evidence that consumer spending is "picking up" in his assessment of when to begin raising interest rates.

Lockhart told an audience at the Baton Rouge Rotary Luncheon in Louisiana on May 6 that he "will be looking for direct confirming evidence that consumer spending is accelerating" in the coming weeks.

He singled out the release of the latest non-farm payroll figures on May 8, which he hopes will show
