Eurozone inflation goes negative with QE looming
Draghi acknowledges risks to mandate ‘higher than they were’ six months ago
Eurozone inflation has fallen below zero for the first time since 2009, adding to the growing expectation the European Central Bank (ECB) will launch quantitative easing (QE) this month.
Today's Eurostat flash estimate puts annual HICP inflation at -0.2% in December, a sharp decline from 0.3% in November and predominantly a result of plummeting oil prices. Core HICP inflation remained stable at 0.7%.
The latest figures follow ECB president Mario Draghi's observation in an interview with Handelsb
