IMF calls on Iceland to defend central bank credibility

Fund directors say governance review should retain most reforms from 2009 act

The International Monetary Fund today called on Iceland to maintain the independence and credibility of the central bank, encouraging the country to hang on to the "key governance reforms" enacted in 2009, which led to the three-governor system being replaced with a single governor and a monetary policy committee (MPC).

Peter Dohlman, the IMF's mission chief to Iceland, would not be drawn on the controversial process now underway to appoint a governor to a five-year term starting in September
