Ingves: Swedes should be forced to amortise mortgages
Riksbank governor notes that 40% of households currently ‘do not amortise at all'
Stefan Ingves, the governor of the Riksbank, today reiterated calls for a legal requirement that would force Swedish households to amortise their mortgages, saying such a requirement is "self-evident" in most of the rest of the world.
"The most natural thing would be for the banks to require that customers amortise their first loans," Ingves said today during a speech at the Stockholm School of Economics, adding that this would lead to a "direct" decline in the stock of existing mortgages and
