Barbro Wickman-Parak, the outgoing deputy governor at Sveriges Riksbank, today called for central bank independence to be reconsidered in light of their expanding responsibilities.

In her swan song as deputy governor, Wickman-Parak argued that central banks are moving from a "situation with one instrument and one well-defined objective to a situation with several instruments and a more complicated objective".

She said independence is "relatively easy to justify" with regard to central banks
