Pacific island countries cannot rely on external demand

External demand "is unlikely to be a major source of growth" for island countries in the Pacific, as it will remained subdued "through the medium term", according to Scott Roger, a project co-ordinator at the Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre – a branch of the IMF.

As such, "impetus for stronger growth within the Pacific region will need to come from within", Roger told an audience at the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
