Much discussion has centred on the short-term – often emergency – policy responses implemented since the outset of the global financial crisis in 2007. But ultimately, attention needs to switch to the longer-term, fundamental aspects of how to build the new financial system of the future. This article will focus on the latter dimension and will consider the following central issues:

● The new global financial architecture – what should it be?

● The international debate on capital flow management
