The Russian economy gradually returned to a positive growth path in 2010, according to the Bank of Russia's Banking Supervision Report 2010, released on Thursday.

"Lending to the economy picked up and the quality of loan portfolios stabilised and gradually improved from the third quarter onward," said Sergey Ignatiev, governor of the central bank. "This was an important factor, which contributed to a significant increase in profitability of banking. The profits that the banks earned in 2010
