IMF paper addresses asset shortages in emerging markets

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) paper, published in May, says the further development of financial markets and regulation in emerging market countries can help address shortages in financial assets.

Jiaqian Chen and Patrick Imam, the paper's authors, use data on emerging market economies between 1995 and 2008 to explain how asset shortages develop. They note that while savings in emerging markets has remained strong since the Asian financial crisis in 1998, the supply of financial assets
