ECB's Trichet on monetary policy in EMU

In the speech 'Monetary policy in EMU - views and challenges' given on 24 June Jean-Claude Trichet of the ECB said slow growth rates in some euro zone countries may reflect poor competitiveness and economic rigidities, rather than the normal divergences seen within any monetary union.

'There are cases where lasting real growth differentials do not reflect welcome catching-up processes, but rather structural deficiencies in some countries, leading to low trend output growth and persistently high
