Finland missing 1.45bn markka after euro switch

Close to 1.45 billion Finnish markka, equivalent to 244 million euros, have yet to be exchanged for euros two and a half years after Finland switched to the euro, a Bank of Finland official said.

"We still have outstanding banknotes worth some 850 million Finnish markka and coins of about 600 million markka," Kenneth Sainio, a regional manager with Finland's central bank, told AFP.

Originally there were nearly 18 billion markkas in circulation, he added, according to AFP.

Most of the denominations
