Bernanke: we must support mortgage securitisation

The government has a role in supporting mortgage securitisation during periods of high financial stress, said Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Speaking at a university symposium in California, he said that regardless of the organisational form, there was a need to design a housing financing system that ensured the successful funding and securitisation of mortgages during times of financial stress but that did not create institutions that posed systemic risks to financial
