ECB Duisenberg - EU enlargement no threat to euro

GERMANY - The planned enlargement of the European Union by a number of accession countries poses no threat to the euro currency, European Central Bank President Wim Duisenberg said Friday.

Asked whether the eastern enlargement of the European Union could pose a threat to the euro, Duisenberg said "no."

Duisenberg was speaking to reporters on his way in to a European banking congress in Frankfurt.

Twelve Eastern European and Mediterranean countries are currently negotiating to join the E.U.
