EU's Almunia says Slovakia on track to adopt euro

EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Thursday on a one-day visit to Slovakia that it was on target to meet its aim of adopting the euro single currency in 2009.

The main monetary figures and the fiscal situation "are going in a good direction," Almunia said. "If things continue as they are today, I'm sure the Slovak authorities will meet the target of being a member of the euro-zone in 2009."
