ECB's Issing on strengthening economic governance

In a speech given on 28 September, Otmar Issing of the ECB defended the Eurozone's Stability and Growth Pact, saying it was "appropriate in its present form".

But he said there was scope for improvement in the implementation of the pact.

Issing said he could see some scope for common ground between the ECB, the Commission and EU member states on the reform of the pact in general, but he said he opposed some key aspects of the proposed reform.
