France may opt to use gold to fund research

The French government is looking at the possibility of using its gold reserves to finance research, with a ministerial source quoted as saying that while the gold is managed by the central bank it belongs to France.

Following Germany, the French government is looking at the gold sitting in central bank vaults as a possible means to finance research, despite likely stiff political and legal opposition.

The Bank of France has 3,000 tonnes of gold in the form of ingots and worth more than EUR 30
