Central bank employees to strike in Israel

Bank of Israel employees are to begin a protest strike against Bank of Israel Governor David Klein and the Bank's Board of Directors, according to Maariv International.

Employees will prevent the publication of representative rates for the dollar and foreign currencies, as well as the implementation of the monetary tender for banks, resulting in disruptions of financial operations in the market, the report said.

The Bank's Board were quoted as saying that the Bank of Israel's Employees Committee torpedoed an attempt by the Histadrut to prevent a general strike in the bank. "The Employees Committee is cynically and irresponsibly using the strike at the expense of the employees by falsely claiming that they have no grasp of the reality. A last-minute attempt made by the Chairman of the Bank Employees Division in the Histadrut Zion Shema on the eve of Shavuot to cancel the strike failed due to exaggerated Committee demands."

According to the report by Maariv International, the Board announced that striking employees will not receive salaries for strike days. In a special circular sent to employees on the eve of the holiday, the Bank Board announced that "the Bank will withhold salary from all employees for strike days in their May salary".
