Nobel prize winner calls for central bank autonomy

The joint winner of the 2004 Nobel economics prize, Finn Kydland, called on governments on Monday 11 October to guarantee central bank independence and praised the European Central Bank, while criticising Latin American policy makers.

Kydland said central banks needed enough independence from politicians to carry out a credible monetary policy.

The more independent they were from political authorities, the better able they were to follow his key recommendations - greater rule-bound transparency
