Malaysia is latest country to seek Brics membership

However, uncertainty remains over whether Saudi Arabia will join emerging economies bloc

Malaysia on 28 July became the latest country to apply to join the Brics group of emerging economies.

Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the application during a two-day visit to Malaysia by Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. The Malaysian foreign ministry said in a statement that Lavrov had given assurances that Russia would back the application.

Ibrahim first disclosed Malaysia’s interest in joining Brics in June during an interview with Chinese news outlet Guancha, ahead of a visit
