Ambassador says Mir will help Cuba counter effects of embargo

Cuban authorities are finalising arrangements to extend the Russian Mir payment card system to their country.

Russian ambassador Andrei Guskov said: “On the Cuban end, the work to put the Mir payment system into operation is almost concluded.”

Guskov said Mir would help Cuba circumvent the effects of the decades-long US embargo by creating “links that evade the financial organisations of unfriendly states”. It would also attract more Russian tourists to Cuba.
