Fed’s Powell: normalisation will be ‘manageable’ for emerging markets

Fed governor says current capital flows appear to be in line with fundamentals

Normalisation of monetary policy in advanced economies will throw up challenges for emerging markets, but they should prove “manageable”, Jerome Powell said on October 12.

Capital flows are a major factor in the economic performance of emerging markets (EMs), the Federal Reserve governor told a gathering in Washington, DC. Recently, investors have been moving capital back into emerging markets despite higher rates in the US, which appeared to be due to strong economic fundamentals in EMs
