ECB will ‘probably’ cut rates in October – BdF governor

The European Central Bank (ECB) will probably cut rates at its meeting on October 17, the governor of the Banque de France has said.

In an interview on October 7 with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, François Villeroy de Galhau said Eurosystem policy-makers had shifted their attention from overshooting to undershooting the ECB’s 2% inflation target.

“True, core inflation is still at 2.7%, with services inflation stickier at 4%,” he said. “But core inflation should recede gradually closer to 2%
