Fed vice-chair backs further tightening

Clarida says data likely to support further rate hikes as Mester warns US is “beyond full employment”

Federal Reserve vice-chair Richard Clarida is the latest of President Trump’s nominees to support gradual policy rate increases.

Clarida joined the Fed’s board in August. Trump has recently made a series of attacks on the Fed’s tightening of policy. “If the data comes in as I expect, I believe that some further gradual adjustment in the federal funds rate will be appropriate.” Clarida said in his first major policy speech on October 25 in Washington, DC.

Clarida added that the monetary policy
