Rajan says central banks need government support

The governor of the Reserve Bank of India has said it is "essential" governments around the world support central banks as they exercise independence.

Speaking at a conference for statistics, Raghuram Rajan stressed the importance of central banks being able to make a case for policies that will not always be popular.

He gave the example of the Bank of England, which in recent months was criticised for laying out the economic costs of the UK leaving the European Union. The European Central Bank
